Women who are pregnant and parenting experience higher rates of domestic and family violence, homelessness and poverty than almost any other cohort. This has impacts for women, their babies and children, our Canberra community and for generations to come. But pregnancy can also be a time of hope and change.

For over 26 years, Karinya House has had the privilege of walking alongside women who are experiencing crises, before, during and after pregnancy. Providing safe housing, health advice, casework, counselling, trauma services, baby goods and much more – we have supported over 2,500 women in Canberra since we began.

This unique charity event is inspired by 26 powerful years of resilience and strength.

It is wonderful to confirm that Jo Farrell, ACT Australian of the Year, ACT Woman of the Year and founder of Build Like A Girl, will be our keynote speaker.

We thank Jo also for her support for this event, and for the work of Karinya over recent years. You can read more about Jo’s incredible journey here: Joanne Farrell | Australian of the Year

All funds raised through this event, and across the month of May, will go directly to Karinya House, supporting women and their babies and children in the Canberra region. The event will establish the Home. Hope. Horizon. Charity Appeal which will run across the month of May 2024 (and we hope each year hence). All donations throughout May to this Appeal will be matched by our matched giving partners.  Currently, the matched giving fund is confirmed at $30,000. As part of their wonderful partnership, Parker Coles Curtis are providing $5,000 toward this fund.

Donations to the Home. Hope. Horizon. Charity Appeal can be made here.

Our 2023 inaugural event was a sell- out, and this year will be no different. With an audience of over 250, including prominent businesses, media commentators, celebrities, politicians and eminent local and regional guests – all guests are united in their desire to make a difference in their community.

Partnership opportunities for this event are now open. You can find more information here.

However you identify, you are welcome to join us to celebrate the women in your lives.

We choose to celebrate women in May for many reasons.  May is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month. May also encompasses Mother’s Day, and also Bereaved Mother’s Day, which at Karinya we recognise can be both days of celebration and challenging days for many.  Other days occurring in May which have significance to Karinya are International Day for Midwives, International Day for Nurses, National Volunteers Week, National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week.

Karinya House is committed to reconciliation. We acknowledge the traditional owners of the land upon which we live and work and pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging. We extend this recognition and respect to all Aboriginal people we work with, both as colleagues and those we walk alongside.  We recognise sovereignty was never ceded and we celebrate the never-ending connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people around Australia to land, water and community.
