Anti–Poverty Week 2019 was held from the 13th to the 19th of October. Karinya House and other organisations across the community sector have been working to intensify our advocacy against poverty around the country. Susan Helyar, CEO of ACTCOSS – ACT Council of Social Service Inc., said: “Those most at risk of poverty in Canberra include Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples, people in newly arrived communities, people with disabilities, people over the age of 80, carers, and single-income households – especially those with children.” The statistics are alarming but we encourage all Australians to take action and focus on positive solutions to end poverty. The “Unlikely” podcast series, hosted by Bree Element, has been produced by our Friends and online charity GIVIT – Goods For Good Causes as part of Anti Poverty Week. Each episode sheds light on an unlikely person who after a life-changing event, found themselves living in poverty. Thank you GIVIT for producing the podcast series and sharing our purpose of walking alongside women, who are pregnant or parenting newborns, with little or no support within our community.

At Karinya House, we believe it is important to recognise that not every woman has shelter, stability or support in Canberra. Some women are at risk of violence, experience homelessness or are completely isolated. Often these are the women who Karinya House walks alongside.

To do this, Karinya House has a team of Case Workers, Counsellors, Midwives and a purpose-built secure accommodation facility which is home for 10 women and their children at any one time.
