There is a wonderful group of women at Boorowa, in our local region, who organise this wonderful walk every second year. Karinya House has been most privileged to be the recipient of the funds raised by this event. The event is on again this year, and we are very proud to support the event through the capabilities on our website. Our thanks to the team at Rowdy Digital who have helped us to set up both the Event Registration and the Fundraising Pages for the Mercy Walk for Women Organising Group.
Teena, the event coordinator, says this about the walk:
“Mercy Walk for Women is on again and this biennial event is a wonderful day for women to come together for women. We will start at St Patrick’s Catholic Church Boorowa and finish at St Clement’s Monastery Galong, a walking distance of approximately 26km.
Enjoying morning tea and lunch along the way and champagne and nibbles at our destination. Mercy Walk for Women is an opportunity for women to walk and talk while raising much needed funds for Karinya House for Mothers and Babies.
Mercy Walk for Women has helped Karinya House to provide shelter, warmth (especially through those cold winters), food, clothing, support and advocacy for mothers and babies. Homelessness and family violence are critical issues. 50% of the women of Karinya are homeless upon referral. Over 60% of women are moving away from family violence.
Women seek the help and support of Karinya House for many different reasons. Every woman has a story and every story is unique.
Mercy Walk for Women encourages the awareness of the many issues faced by women and young girls locally and globally in regards to domestic violence, gender inequality, education, poverty, homelessness and displacement.
We strongly encourage you to fundraise and donate generously to this event.
We are promoting respect for women by walking together as one.”
If you are a keen walker, and you love a walk through the country, especially with the Canola in full bloom, then this is the walk for you. You can register here.
If you are not able to participate in the walk itself, you can sponsor the walk generally, or one of the walkers specifically, if you have a friend taking up the challenge. You can make a donation and leave a message of support as well.
Our thanks again to Teena and the team at Boorowa. We just love this event and we love the Spirit of this event. It is a massive undertaking by a small group of wonderful people. We remain humbled by this support, and we value our regional and rural Friends, a vital part of our growing Circle.
Just an update on the fabulous Mercy Walk for Women. We had almost 100 women turn up for the walk on 25 September. This was despite the most inordinate amount of rain prior to the walk causing a minor change in the route, and threatening to rain on the walker’s parade! The walk ended up being 23 kms, having lost a couple of kilometres due to flooded creek crossings. We did get rained on slightly every now and then! We all made it to the end… and the walk itself generated over $9,000 in total donated to Karinya House. Simply awesome effort. You can see photos from this year’s walk here. And we even made the local press, The Boorowa News.
