Every woman who is pregnant or parenting should be surrounded with the support she needs. Built on a Practice Framework founded in the ‘pedagogy of care’, Karinya House has walked with women in Canberra and the surrounding Region, providing safety, shelter and a positive support network for over 24 years.

Karinya House provides safe housing, casework, support during pregnancy and birth and connections to health, welfare, legal, educational and financial services.

The Karinya House Practice Framework is founded within the principals of trauma informed care and practice. Individual casework management and flexibility in service provision are paramount at Karinya House. An individualised support plan is developed with each woman, in response to their priorities. Our support plans are aimed at promoting self-direction, empowerment and competence which facilitate women moving forward on their own.

The work of Karinya House is sustained by the strong sense of collegiality and respect within the people of Karinya. The Karinya House team includes social work and community service professionals and health professionals.

Karinya House is committed to ensure we have the workforce capability and culture to deliver specialist supports to women with diverse and complex needs. As part of this commitment, we are currently seeking to build our ‘Care Team’ through the recruitment of Support Workers (Casual with conversion to Part-Time available once shifts are established).

An ability to work compassionately with pregnant and parenting women and families with complex needs and promote their empowerment and independence is an essential requirement of these positions.
