Acknowledgement of Country

Karinya – an aboriginal word meaning ‘peaceful (or happy) home’ *

Karinya House recognises the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to own and control their cultures and pay our respect to these rights.  Karinya House acknowledges, respects and seeks to learn from the diversity of Indigenous cultures, Indigenous world views, lifestyles and customary laws.

We extend our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who for thousands of years have preserved the cultures and practices of their communities on country.

This land was never surrendered, and we acknowledge that it always was and will continue to always be Aboriginal land.

* The indigenous origins of the word “Karinya” – We acknowledge there are over 250 Indigenous languages in Australia and more than 800 dialects, many of which were not documented. In seeking to identify the language group to which the word “Karinya” belongs, we have undertaken extensive research included seeking guidance from the State Library of Victoria, the National Library of Australia and The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS), with the Ngunnawal Language Group here in the ACT.  This research indicated consensus the word appeared to be a word from an Indigenous language group (within Australia); however, we remain unable to find the language group of origin. We continue to seek some conclusive answer regularly as more research into the indigenous language groups within Australia continues, however at this point we remain without firm confirmation. We would welcome any advice from any person or organisation in this regard.
